Flying high up in the sky.
Like a bird, the kite soars on the wind but unlike a bird, it can only go where the wind blows it.
Aimlessly it floats up in the air only to crash to earth when the breeze that kept it aloft dies down to a whisper.
Today was good kite flying weather and although I didn’t have a kite to sail on the updrafts I can recall the joy and pleasure of running with a brightly coloured kite until it became airborne.
The thrill of “playing” the string so it caught every gust of wind as it soared higher and higher.
And finally winding it in like a true expert and catching it before it thumped to the ground.
This is the art of kite flying.
And least we forget… one of my most favourite movies as a child… Mary Poppins.
At the end of the show, when everything turns out as it should, the fun begins.
Let’s go fly a kite
Up to the highest height!
Let’s go fly a kite and send it soaring
Up through the atmosphere
Up where the air is clear
Oh, let’s go fly a kite!
